Fiesta Fiesta!! Sunna, the greenhouse at Sólheimar, was our weekly dose of green. Every Friday we would wake up and shine at the anticipation of playing in the soil in the warm and lively atmosphere of the budding produce.
The tomatoes shot up in the blink of an eye (over two months), and we worked to keep them standing tall, pruning them for maximum yield. One of our primary tasks was pulling off the “armpits” of the tomatoes, so the plant could focus its energy elsewhere. Kind of like when humans have to take care to cut out the non-essentials in life, and focus on what is important, like family and fresh produce! 🙂
We visited Friðheimar greenhouse for a tomato-soup lunch – fresh off the vine! Friðheimar is a greenhouse that encompasses 18% of the Icelandic tomato market. Woah!
Being a very isolated island nation, fresh vegetables are expensive and not that easy for CELL students to obtain. The greenhouse, Sunna, was a great way to learn to grow food sustainably, and to get our veggie fix. There’s nothing more local than a 3 minute walk from your house!
This is Sunna in full bloom. Ain’t she a beaut?
