Less than three weeks into living and learning in an eco-village, I think the greatest realizations I have gained all pertain to my personal life. After hearing about the founding of Sólheimar and watching the story of Professor Wangari Maathai and the Green Belt Movement in Kenya, I reflected on how I use my determination and ability to make a positive difference for others. Sesselja Sigmundsdóttir acted as a pioneer advocating for the equality of individuals with disabilities, and was able to open Sólheimar as a home and community in Iceland fully integrating those with and without disabilities by the 1930s. Professor Maathai acted as an environmental political activist who faced violent attacks for her actions, yet continued to fight for justice of the environment and people in Kenya. Although there is nothing wrong with supporting something that one is passionate about, I personally have been content in the security of quietness rather than pushing myself to do the uncomfortable that sparks the change our world so desperately needs. I usually find a cause that I believe in and follow others who act as the voice leading a movement. I do not have any excuses to remain quiet about issues harming our planet and society.  Having the opportunity to be a part of a devoted community with incredible individuals standing beside me is a very powerful thing, and I look forward to stepping up to the task of being a leader and making change. CELL is not only sharing the tools of knowledge and confidence to help students make a positive impact on the world, but is the perfect real life example of the kind of beautiful environment and community I strive to fight for.
