This Guest Post was submitted by CELL Alum Julia Swalchick from the Forward on Climate Change Rally in Washington, D.C. on February 17th, 2013.
Never have I been a part of something so real. Participating in the ‘largest climate change rally in US history’ was one of the most phenomenal, powerful, and eye-opening experiences I’ve ever had. I was extremely moved by Bill McKibben’s speech, especially his statement, “All I ever wanted to see was a movement of people to stop climate change. And now I’ve seen it! You guys look so beautiful.” In the exact moment that these words left his lips, I knew that I had a voice and it was being heard. I was a change maker. I knew that I had found my calling- to go out and make a difference in the world around me, infecting others with the same drive and passion to join me along the way.
Surrounded by a diverse crowd of students, parents, grandparents, adults and children, I was overwhelmed with a sense of belonging and empowerment. I know that my generation is going to make a difference. We are a generation of environmentally aware and socially conscious, empathic individuals. We are the lofty dreamers and innovative thinkers that will take on our world’s largest issues.
