by Jordan Mattheisen
1) I will eat in season with at least 70% of food sourced locally by the end of this summer, 2) I will lead my family (parents and sisters) through the Food Session in the Choices for Sustainable Reading and assist my sisters in building a vegetable garden for their new house to encourage them to eat more sustainably, and 3) I will start a community garden and promote food education of adolescents in my neighborhood. I wanted to focus my efforts on food because many issues of sustainability stem from food transportation and land exploitation. I want to serve as an example promoting healthier eating and living to my family and the greater urban neighborhood that I am a part of. As a part of my project, I am also providing information and containers to encourage my family to start composting their food scraps.
After promoting seasonal and local eating practices over the summer, I will check in on both my progress and theirs every three months to ensure that sustainable food consumption is maintained all year round.
