The first and only time I’d ever heard of biodynamic agriculture prior to going to this farm was in the film Our Idiot Brother. Which was a short and entertaining introduction; “What is biodynamic, exactly? I’ve never understood the difference between that and organic.”  – Parole officer “Planting kind of depends on the lunar calendar.”- Ned. The real biodynamic farm I visited was much more involved than the rom com had made it seem. The focus was on soil composition and maintaining the health of the beautiful dark brown fragrant that lets everything grow. The way they went about that would seem really strange to most people. Preparations for spring include fermenting manure, keeping track of astrology to know when to plant certain vegetables, and the all-important crop rotation!

You could tell by the farmer’s voice that he really loved the farm, he spoke with deep consideration every time we asked a question, usually making it at least a seven minute answer.  With each area we entered we were often greeted by adorable fuzzy animals. The cows were by far my favorite part, a few were pregnant and others had just had little baby cows (calf’s).  The cows were vocal and wanted everyone to know when they were upset or wanted you to pet them! The whole experience was filled with awe, at the animals, the farmer’s knowledge, and the overall aesthetic to the place.  I really enjoyed my time there and hope to visit another biodynamic farm when I return to the states.

Take care,
